Richard E. Squires was elected as Atlantic County Executive in 1984. He served four terms as County Executive, through 2000, He has been active in county government since 1975 when he was first elected to the Board of Freeholders where he served as Chairman from 1978 to 1983.
Under the leadership of Mr. Squires, Atlantic County built the Canale Police and Firefighters Training Center and County Pistol Range in Egg harbor Township, and established the Veterans Cemetery in Estell Manor. Jointly with the 200 Club and the City of Atlantic City, the Squires Administration was responsible for the construction of the Police and Firefighters Memorial in Atlantic City. Squires also created the Office of Highway Safety in Atlantic County.
Mr. Squires has been energetically involved in numerous governmental and civic organizations and has held several leadership positions in state, regional and national organizations.
He is a former Chairman of the South Jersey Economic Development District and Former Chairman of the South Jersey Transportation Planning Organization, which consists of four counties; Atlantic, Cape May, Cumberland and Salem. He was in the County Executives of America Association and was elected President of that organization in 1989-1990, He has also served on the Board of Directors of the National Association of Counties and was active on its Task Force on aging and Intergenerational Issues. He was a member of the NACo Human Services and Education Steering Committee and Chairman of the NACo Committee on Aging. He was also Chairman of the Liability and Insurance Subcommittee of the NACo's Justice and Public Safety Steering Committee.
He is former co-chairman of the New Jersey Association of Counties Task Force on Judicial Unification and Tax Reform and served on the New Jersey Assembly Task Force on the 21st Century. He was a member of the Governor's Property Tax Commission and the New Jersey Korean War Memorial Committee.
Mr. Squires in a former tax assessor for Egg Harbor Township and Pleasantville, served as a tax collector in Northfield, and was a tax consultant for the City of Brigantine.
